Nepali Laborers

Cohen Milstein represents the families of 11 men who were trafficked from Nepal to Iraq.  The men believed they were going to work at hotels in Jordan, but instead were sent against their will to work for a US military sub-contractor in Iraq.  Unfortunately, the 11 men were captured by insurgents and killed on the way to the US base where they were to work.

Cohen Milstein pursued a Defense Base Act claim and has so far obtained summary judgment on behalf of the spouse, child and parent survivors of the men, resulting in a significant award that will enable the families to pay off the debts they incurred to the labor traffickers and to assist them in the future.  The Order found that the men "were brutally killed in August 2004 after being captured by insurgents en route to the military base at which they were assigned to work" and that "they were employed by the Jordanian company Daoud & Partners," a U.S. military sub-contractor.

Attorneys from Cohen Milstein recently traveled to Nepal to oversee the distribution of the awards.  During this trip, Cohen Milstein’s work in this case was recognized by the U.S. Ambassador to Nepal, the Prime Minister of Nepal, the Minister of Labor of Nepal, and Nepal’s Speaker of the House.
