Tarek F. MaassaraniTarek Maassarani is an international human rights fellow at Cohen Milstein. He holds a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center, a masters degree in international affairs from Columbia University’s School for International and Public Affairs, as well as a bachelor of arts in Anthropology and a bachelor of science in Environmental Studies both from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to joining CMHT, Mr. Maassarani was a staff attorney with the Neighborhood Legal Services Program, providing indigent residents of the District of Columbia with legal services and representation in the areas of family, employment, discrimination, public benefits, housing, and consumer law. Mr. Maassarani has also worked with the Government Accountability Project (GAP), an organization that advocates for whistleblowers in the public interest. At GAP, he conducted investigations into First Amendment issues affecting federal climate scientists, which resulted in a published report and testimony before Congress. Mr. Maassarani’s public interest background includes: - teaching street law,
- volunteering for local advocacy organizations such as the Employment Justice Center and the Capital Area Immigration Rights coalition,
- interning with Earthrights International,
- representing a political asylum-seeker,
- providing legal monitoring of political demonstrations,
- serving as amicus counsel for the City of Newton in an environmental justice case before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Body,
- researching race discrimination for the Louisiana Capital Assistance Center,
- conducting HIV/AID workshops in southern Africa,
- managing community development projects in rural Tanzania,
- assisting in the creation of a joint Israeli-Palestinian women’s peace commission,
- and organizing conflict resolution education in DC public schools.
